  EDGAR Introduction

The EDGAR information system is a joint project of MNP, Bilthoven (NL), TNO, Apeldoorn (NL),  JRC-IES, Ispra (IT) and MPIC-AC, Mainz (D), and stores global emission inventories of direct and indirect greenhouse gases from anthropogenic sources including halocarbons and aerosols both on a per country and region basis as well as on a grid. The EDGAR system can generate global, regional and national emissions data in various formats. For all compounds and sources this has presently been done for 1990 and 1995.

The present database has been developed with financial support from the Netherlands Ministry of the Environment (VROM)and the Dutch National Research Programme on Global Air Pollution and Climate Change (NRP), in close cooperation with the Global Emissions Inventory Activity (GEIA), a component of  the Analysis, Integration and Modeling of the Earth System (AIMES) project of the International Geosphere-Biosphere Program (IGBP)and formerly a component of the International Atmospheric Chemistry Programme (IGAC). Future updates will be developed and disseminated in close cooperation with GEIA and with ACCENT, an EU 6th Framework Programme project.

EDGAR consists of: (a) fossil-fuel related sources and (b) biofuel combustion, both on a per country basis; (c) industrial production and consumption processes (including solvent use) also on a per country basis; (d) landuse-related sources, including waste treatment, partially on a grid basis and partially on a per country basis; and (e) selected natural sources on a grid basis.
