  EDGAR v4.0 29 April 2009

A new comprehensive dataset EDGAR v4.0 for greenhouse gases and air pollutants is now being released at the new website: http://edgar.jrc.ec.europa.eu/
Please check out the new datasets, which now run through 2005 and also for air pollutants start in 1970.

Most datasets at this website will be obsolete when updated by EDGAR v4.0 datasets, but still are available as archived data. Exceptions are, for now, the EDGAR-HYDE data, which provide emissions for a 100 year time period, and the ozone depleting substances for 1990.

  Additions / Updates 17 August 2005

Please check out this page regularly for updates, new datasets, updates of caveats, time schedules, etc.

We welcome cooperation with all groups that are interested in global or regional emissions of greenhouse gases or air pollutants! Although the datasets are prepared in cooperation with various groups and individuals, we encourage other inventory developers to make use of the EDGAR system facilities themselves by providing the opportunity to use the powerful options of the system to combine existing or new activity data, emission factors and grid maps to generate new datasets. If the work is incorporated in new EDGAR datasets, specific contributions will of course be properly acknowledged.

Recent major changes 1 August 2005

  • EDGAR 32FT2000. In July 2005, Fast Track emissions for 2000 on grid and per country have been added, based on the estimates for 1995 and prepared by trend analyses at country level for each standard source category of EDGAR 3.2. The dataset is provided with technical documentation on the procedures used to estimate the 2000 emissions. For gridded emissions of large-scale biomass burning four variants have been compiled: annual burned area estimates for either the 1997-2002 average or the actual 2000 area and either the EDGAR 3.2 emission factors or the factors compiled by Andreae and Merlet in 2001.

  • Project team. Since 2004 the EDGAR project team has been expanded. Beside RIVM-MNP and TNO, the Institute for Environmental and Sustainability (IES) of the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the EC in Ispra (I) and the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry (MPI) in Mainz (D) will cooperate in developing new versions of EDGAR. In addition, JRC-IES will host the new database system that is currently under development.

  • Website. The website layout has changed, the structure has been changed and new links have been  added. Most documentation is now available as web pages. The web address of the EDGAR home page has changed too, but old links to the EDGAR website are still working.
  • Grid map viewing tool. A new tool has been added to view the spatial distribution of EDGAR data online. Using ArcIMS, many maps can be selected, compared, zoomed and downloaded.

  NEW as of 16 August 2005 16 August 2005

  • Documentation of FT2000 dataset:  All caveats mentioned in the online documentation and others identified [e.g. on CO2 from other fuel transformation (F30) and gridded aviation emissions (F57)] are now added to the caveats page and are also downloadable. Documentation on the gridded emissions (file names, type and formats) has also been added to the FT2000 pages.
  • Documentation of EDGAR 3.2 gridded aviation emissions.  Documentation on the gridded emissions for altitudes > 1 km (file names, type and formats) has been added to the auxiliary dataset page.
  • Emissions for large-scale biomass burning. For these source categories, Andreae and Merlet (2001) have compiled a comprehensive dataset, based on a large literature search, and published a long list of emission factors, which are considered the best estimates available. The documentation of the 32FT2000 datasets also provides a short list of these (updated) emission factors and the ratio to the emission factors used for the EDGAR 3.2 datasets. Moreover, recommended effective emission heights are provided for these sources.
  • Country data in other formats. Addition of links to sites where EDGAR emissions have been used and are provided in other formats: trend tables and graphs per country (UNEP-GRID) and as part of national environmental data profiles per country (WRI).

  Site relocation 18 October 2005

  • Relocation of the EDGAR 2.0 site. The EDGAR 2.0 site previous located at http://arch.rivm.nl/env/int/coredata/edgar/v2/index.html has been moved to the MNP EDGAR site and is available on this location.

  Other changes 8 October 2004

  • Grid maps. Documentation on the grid maps used for gridded fuel combustion and non-combustion sources has been added.
  • Seasonality. For test-run purposes for atmosperic models a provisional dataset is made provided with the temporal variation of anthropogenic sources (montly, weekly and daily). This dataset has been constructed by TNO-MEP and is primarily meant for use in AC and climate models to check sensitivity of model results for non-uniform distributions of time.
  • Aircraft emissions. Addition of aircraft emissions to gridded emission datasets for 1990 and 1995 (emissions below 1 km included as part of the surface emissions and in km altitude bands above 1 km).
  • CO caveat. Added.
