Number of motor vehicles in the Netherlands, 1980-2002

The number of passenger cars and goods vehicles increased further in 2002 to respectively 6.8 million and almost 190 thousand vehicles.

Developments in passenger car numbers

Between 1980 and 2002, the passenger car fleet grew by more than 50% to a total of 6.8 million cars. The number of cars running on LPG has been declining steadily since 1991 and is now back at the same level as in the early 1980s. There were more than 400,000 motorbikes on the road in 2002, almost five times as many as in 1980.

Developments in goods vehicle numbers

The number of light goods vehicles (delivery vans and light vehicles for special purposes) has risen substantially from 220,000 in 1980 to more than 800,000 in 2002. This is partly a result of the wide-scale use of delivery vans for private passenger transport. The number of heavy goods vehicles (lorries, tractors, buses and vehicles for special purposes) is steadily increasing: 130,000 in 1980 to almost 190,000 in 2002.
