The number of passengers and the amount of freight moving through Schiphol has risen fourfold since 1980. The number of flights more than doubled.

Developments in transport through Schiphol
Both the number of passengers and the amount of freight moving through Schiphol Airport rose fourfold between 1980 and 2002. Since planes have become larger on average, the number of flight movements (the cycle of plane landings and take-offs) rose less in the same period, namely by a factor of 2.5.
Impact of transport through Schiphol
The increase in air traffic has resulted in more complaints about perceived noise nuisance and therefore in more health problems as a result of sleep disorders.
