Emissions to air by target sector, 2002*
Agriculture and horticulture, industry, traffic and transport make the largest contribution to air pollutant emissions.

Contributions from target sectors
- The Agriculture and horticulture target sector is responsible for a substantial proportion of the total emissions of methane (CH4 ; 44%), nitrous oxide (N2O; 48%) and ammonia (NH3; 91%). The contribution to the particulate matter emissions is also considerable (20%).
- The Industry target sector makes a significant contribution to total emissions of HFC/PFC/SF6 (86%), nitrous oxide (45%) and sulphur dioxide (SO2; 52%). The observations for carbon monoxide (combustion) in industry are incomplete since the annual environmental reports do not always include these emission data.
- The Traffic and transport target sector is a major contributor to total emissions of carbon monoxide (CO; 66%), volatile organic compounds (VOC, excluding methane; 44%) and nitrogen oxides (NOx; 67%).
