The Industry and Consumers target sectors make the largest contribution to emissions to water.
- The Consumers target sector makes substantial contributions to total emissions of nitrogen (73%), phosphorus (71%), cadmium (67%), copper (64%), lead (54%) and zinc (50%).
- The Industry target sector is a major contributor to total emissions of chromium (80%) and nickel (68%).
- In the case of mercury and arsenic, the Trade, services and government target sector is the main contributor, with 48% and 57% respectively.
Definitions of the concepts of 'emission' and 'burden'
The table lists the emissions from the various sources. , including both direct emissions to surface water and indirect emissions to the sewer system. Discharges to the sewer system only reach the surface water after treatment; they are therefore indirect. Since a portion of these substances is removed by water treatment plants, the ultimate burden on surface water is lower.
