Emissions to air by Traffic and transport in the Netherlands, 2002*
The lion's share of the emissions by traffic and transport, with the exception of emissions of particulate matter, are caused by road traffic.

| 1) Volatile organic compounds, excluding methane, including evaporation from fuel systems. 2) Particle diameter less than 10 µm (PM10), including emissions from wear on tyres, road surface, brakes and overhead wires. 3) Not corrected for temperature. 4) Including inland fishing and leisure boats. 5) Vessels in port. 6) Emissions from diesel traction and wear on overhead wires. 7) Emissions from landings, take-off and taxiing of aircraft, and the use of internal transport at airfields. | ||||
Contributions from traffic and transport sources
Road traffic is by far the most important source of emissions in the traffic and transport sector, with the exception of sulphur dioxide emissions, which come mainly from other traffic and mobile machinery (80%). Passenger cars and heavy goods vehicles each account for 27% of nitrogen oxide emissions by traffic and transport. Passenger cars are the main source by far (50 to 75%) of emissions of other substances.
Contribution of traffic and transport to total Dutch emissions (not in table)
Traffic and transport (including mobile machinery) make a considerable contribution to the total emissions of carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, VOC (excluding methane) and particulate matter. They account for over 20% of total emissions of sulphur dioxide, more than half of which comes from ocean-going vessels in ports. Furthermore, the Traffic and transport target sector is responsible for almost 20% of total carbon dioxide emissions.
