Developments in numbers of end-of-life vehicles
Approximately 5% of the Dutch vehicle fleet is scrapped every year. In 2002, approximately 315,000 vehicles were sent for dismantling, including 295,000 passenger cars (approximately 95%). The weight of the passenger cars was almost 90% of the total weight of over 300 million kg. The average empty weight of passenger cars and commercial vehicles for dismantling was 900 kg and 1,810 kg respectively in 2002.

Relevance
Although, in terms of weight, vehicles account for only one percent (page is not available yet) of all waste (excluding dredging sludge and manure surpluses), their disposal has traditionally caused significant environmental problems such as use of space and soil pollution.
