Environmental pressure from Consumers target sector: introduction

The Consumers target sector comprises all consumers in the Netherlands. The consumers have not been classified in the Standard Industrial Classification (SIC). Consumers and households are deemed to be the same thing.

Environmental pressure

This section examines the direct environmental pressure caused by consumers. The major activities which generate emissions and waste are:
  • heating of premises (including log fires);
  • cooking and warm water;
  • use of paints, cleaning products, cosmetics and aerosol cans;
  • keeping pets;
  • letting off fireworks;
  • leaching and corrosion of materials (such as zinc in residential gutters).
Consumers contribute to the following environmental themes: Guide to Environmental theme of Climate change (greenhouse effect) , Guide to Environmental theme of Acidification and transboundary air pollution , Guide to Environmental theme of Eutrophication , Guide to Environmental theme of Toxic and hazardous substances and Guide to Environmental theme of Waste management .

Delimitation

The indirect environmental pressure created by the production and delivery of goods and services purchased by consumers is allocated to other target sectors, including Industry and Traffic and transport. The latter sector also includes the environmental pressure created by travel to and from work and recreational traffic. The environmental pressure from electricity generated for consumers is allocated to the Energy supply target sector.
