Greenhouse gas emissions by target sector in the Netherlands, 2002*
The Industry target sector and the Agriculture and horticulture target sector emit the largest proportion of greenhouse gases. Emissions by the Energy supply sector (carbon dioxide and methane) and Traffic and transport (carbon dioxide) also play an important role.
Developments
The total actual emissions of greenhouse gases for the whole of the Netherlands in 2002* were: carbon dioxide (CO2): 188 billion kg, nitrous oxide (N2O): 46 million kg, methane (CH4): 892 million kg and HFC/PFC/SF6: 0.92 million kg.
There has been a major shift in recent years for the proportions of Industry / other target sectors in HFC/PFC/SF6 because Industry has taken two emission reduction measures. It is not altogether clear how the share of the other target sectors for HFC/PFC/SF6 can be attributed to those target sectors.
Policy
By ratifying the Kyoto Protocol, the Netherlands has undertaken to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions by 6% compared to 1990 in the period 2008-2012. The government wishes to achieve three per cent of this reduction in the Netherlands. The other three per cent will be achieved abroad.
Relevance
These actual emissions are used, for example, as input for models (concentrations; transport) and for the National Accounting Matrix including Environmental Accounts (NAMEA), the environmental model accompanying the National Accounts.
