Energy flow chart for the Netherlands, 2002

Most energy (crude oil and oil products) is imported. Most of the natural gas consumed in the Netherlands is home-produced.

Supply of energy carriers

The energy flow chart is a visual representation of the energy carrier balance for the Netherlands. Energy supplies come from winning and imports of energy carriers. The Netherlands mainly produces natural gas and oil. Most of the energy carriers supply consists of crude oil, hard coal, natural gas and electricity.

Withdrawal of energy carriers

Total energy use in the Netherlands (the sum of the black blocks) is 3,141 PJ. Domestic use accounts for only one-third of the total supplies. The primary products and imported energy carriers are not all used in the Netherlands. Large amounts of crude oil and oil products are also shipped on.

Bunkers

Bunkers are not classified under energy consumption in the Netherlands. These are motor fuels that are used in international shipping and aviation; most consumption takes place outside the Netherlands.
