Run-off and drainage of pesticides in the Netherlands, 2000

Developments in the Netherlands

Drainage is primarily an issue in the coastal provinces, Flevoland and the Gelderland valley; run-off plays a part in the eastern and southern provinces. Although propachlor has the highest calculated run-off, it is officially accepted that its application in onion farming is indispensable. This substance will continue to account for a large proportion of run-off unless current policy changes. Drainage and run-off are both relatively high in the case of aldicarb. To achieve further reductions in the emissions of this substance to groundwater, its use is subject to restrictions.

Technical note

The figures state the calculated drainage and run-off from agricultural holdings, aggregated over the substances listed in the indicator emissions of pesticides. Not all substances are used everywhere; different substances will determine run-off and drainage for each region. Nature areas are not shown; there will be no run-off or drainage there.
