Dutch government expenditure to reduce traffic noise, 1985-2001

Government spending on the reduction of traffic noise increased again in 2001. Most expenditure has gone into the construction of quiet roads (using very open asphalt concrete), noise barriers alongside existing roads and measures to reduce noise from aviation.

Expenditure on traffic noise

Road, rail and air traffic are the main sources of noise nuisance in the Netherlands. In addition to legislative and financial instruments, the national government also makes a financial contribution to the reduction of noise nuisance. This takes the form of spending on various types of measures:
  • tackling the source of the noise nuisance, for example by promoting quieter engines;
  • limiting the spread of the noise with, for example, noise barriers and quiet asphalt;
  • reduction of noise levels at the point where it generates nuisance, for example by insulating housing.
