Dutch environmental expenditure as a proportion of total government expenditure

Environmental expenditure as a proportion of total government expenditure increased between 1985 and 2002 from 0.7% to 1.5%.

Environmental expenditure

Environmental expenditure as a proportion of total government expenditure increased between 1985 and 2002 from 0.7% to 1.5%. Environmental expenditure increased from EUR 0.8 billion in 1985 to more than EUR 2 billion in 2002. This increase is primarily the result of increased expenditure for climate change (including stimulating energy conservation), for eutrophication (primarily for the purposes of the Regulation on Discontinuation of Livestock Farming) and for research and development.

Adjustment of figures

The changes in environmental expenditure by central government for each environmental theme are different from the figures published previously in the EDC. This is the result of:
  • a change in the distribution of environmental expenditure by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the various environmental themes;
  • a revision of expenditure for fertiliser policy by the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature Management and Fisheries in the period 1996-2000.
