Environmental investments in Industry and Energy Supply in the Netherlands, 1975-2002
In recent years, environmental investments in the Industry and Energy sectors have accounted for 4.5% or more of total investment in these target sectors.

Developments in environmental investments
The level of investment by business (mining and quarrying, industry excluding recycling industries, refineries and energy supply) may fluctuate strongly, meaning that conclusions may only be drawn based on data over a long time series. The graph shows that the average environmental investments as a percentage of total investments have risen in a period of more than 20 years. In the 1970s, the average percentage was approximately 3.3%, rising to 3.7% in the 1980s and to 5.4% in the 1990s. Since 2000, the proportion of total investments has been lower, but it has not fallen below 4.5%.
Technical note
The values in the graph show the progressive averages for five years. The figures relate to companies with twenty or more employees in mining and quarrying, industry (with the exception of recycling industries) and public utilities. Since 1997, the figures relating to investments have been published on Statline (Statistics Netherlands) for businesses with ten or more employees.
