Developments in environmental investments
The level of investment by business (mining and quarrying, industry excluding recycling industries, refineries and energy supply) may fluctuate strongly, meaning that conclusions may only be drawn based on data over a long time series. The graph shows that the average environmental investments as a percentage of total investments have risen in a period of more than 20 years. In the 1970s, the average percentage was approximately 3.3%, rising to 3.7% in the 1980s and to 5.4% in the 1990s. Since 2000, the proportion of total investments has been lower, but it has not fallen below 4.5%.
