Large waterbodies
The large waterbodies have distant horizons. The openness and extent of these waterscapes and seascapes contrasts with landscapes.
Characteristics
Strictly speaking, the large waterbodies are not landscapes, but they are nevertheless treated as such in the Nature Compendium. This "landscape type" comprises the North Sea and the waterbodies linked to it (the Wadden Sea, Oosterschelde, Westerschelde), and dammed inlets (Lake Lauwer, Lake IJssel and the dammed delta waterbodies).
Trends
These waterscapes and seascapes still retain their open character, with distant horizons. The coastal skyline has certainly changed in recent decades, with the construction of tall apartment blocks, hotels and wind turbine parks.
