Animals in the "green and blue arteries"

Many plant and animal species are found in the "green and blue arteries"; some even rely on this network.

Current situation

Half of the approximately 400 species of native mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and butterflies are wholly or partly dependent on the cultural (i.e. farmed) landscape. Reptiles such as snakes and lizards live mainly in nature areas. About half of all the species of birds and butterflies also occur in the cultural landscape. Mammals (e.g. mice) and amphibians such as frogs and newts are even numerous in cultural areas. These species of the cultural landscape are found mainly in the green and blue arteries.

Technical note

The graph shows the number of species in a given category. The data are based on atlases and descriptions of the species' habitats.
