The built-up area: changes in area 1977 - 1996
The built-up area grew by over 630 km2 in just 20 years, largely because of residential and industrial development.

Trends
Between 1977 and 1997 the built-up area (designated for residential and industrial/commercial use) increased by almost 550 km2 to a total of 3206 km2. The area of transport infrastructure (mainly roads and railways) increased by 76 km2. Much less land is under greenhouses, and the increase in this area during the 20-year period was also small: about 11 km2.
