Number of endangered species
Many Dutch plants and animals are endangered.
Trends
Red Lists of endangered species have been drawn up for a number of plant and animal groups, revealing that over a third of the species in each species group are endangered (see figure). Only in the marine fish group is the percentage smaller. In the reptile, fungi and butterfly groups, as many as two-thirds of the species are on the Red List. Many species of butterfly, stonefly, freshwater fish and lichen have gone extinct in the Netherlands.
Technical note
The graph shows the percentage of the species in the Red List category, per species group. A separate table shows the numbers of endangered species, per species group. The threat status has been taken from the relevant Red Lists, and the nomenclature and definitions of categories correspond as nearly as possible to the names and definitions used by the World Conservation Union (IUCN).
Not only the official Dutch Red Lists published in the Staatscourant but also the proposed lists have been used. There are official Dutch lists for mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians, freshwater fish, grasshoppers and crickets, dragonflies, lichens and fungi. The Red List of higher plants has not yet been published, but there is a provisional report containing proposals for the Red List. Draft Red Lists are available for bees, marine species (including fish), mosses, caddis flies, mayflies and stoneflies, and terrestrial and freshwater crustaceans.
Marine fish species that occur on the Dutch Continental Shelf (DCS) but are typical of deep waters (50-200m) have not been assessed for inclusion in the Red List; the DCS does not have such deep water. Neither have migratory fish been considered.
