Areas with rare plants
Some areas in the Netherlands (south Limburg and the dunes, for example) harbour a large number of rare plant species.
Current situation
Many rare species have declined so sharply that they have been put on the Red List of endangered species. Some areas in the Netherlands harbour large numbers of these species, with south Limburg and the dunes being notable in this respect, as they still harbour species that have declined greatly elsewhere in the country.
Technical note
The map has been compiled from data from the Florbase national flora databank which includes 8 million observations of species reported in the period 1975-2000 by volunteers, provinces, land managers and research institutes. The number of endangered plant species (these are the species in the Red List of vascular plants) has been totalled for each km2 grid square.
Florbase has insufficient data for some important areas, most of which are in northwest Overijssel.
