Heathland in Brabant is suffering from water draw-down

Because of water draw-down much of the boggy heathland has disappeared in the area around Breda and Tilburg.

Trends

In many places around Breda and Tilburg boggy heathland has disappeared as a result of falling ground water tables. The fall has been considerable: in some cases 40 cm or more in about 40 years. The main reason for the draw-down in this area is the draining of farmland between 1950 and 1990, during rural development schemes.

Technical note

The extent of the draw-down around Breda and Tilburg is shown in terms of the fall in the mean ground water table (GVG) in centimetres below ground level. The situation in the 1960s is compared with that in 2001. In addition, data are presented on the occurrence of boggy heath in 1 km2 grid squares in these two years. The data are derived from an Alterra database of Noord-Brabant water tables and from the FLORON floristic database.
