Donations for environmental protection, nature conservation and animal welfare

In the Netherlands, most donations for nature-related causes are from households.

Trends

The lion's share of the financial contribution to nature-related causes is from individual households. There was an exceptional peak in 1995 due to the large amount of property donated. If one considers only monetary donations, there was an increase from NLG 214 million in 1995 to NLG 291 million in 1999. Donations in the form of legacies and funds also increased.

Better-off households donate more often to nature and environmental causes; this is less so in the case of other good causes. Women and people with a university education have the greatest affinity with nature, the environment and animal welfare.

In 1999, the Dutch donated 1.2% of GDP to good causes. That figure is the sum total of donations made by households, legacies, trust funds and business sponsoring. Of this total, 7% went on environmental conservation, nature conservation and animal welfare.

Technical note

The figures are from the biennial survey of donations made in support of good causes. Donations comprise both money and goods. The survey does not distinguish between donations in support of nature, the environment and animal welfare. The reasons for the exceptional peak for households in 1995 are unclear.
