Youth associations for nature study: membership figures

Membership of the two Dutch youth associations for nature study is falling sharply.

Trends

The two youth associations for nature study are for young people between the ages of 12 and 25 and are run by their members. They arrange nature study courses and organise other activities related to the natural environment. Membership of the two associations has fallen in the past ten years, to approximately 1000.

This sharp decline in membership began in the 1980s and would seem to be due to diminishing interest in studying nature among young people and the social trend towards individualisation.

Technical note

The graph indicates the total number of members of the Nederlandse Jeugdbond voor Natuurstudie, NJN, (Netherlands Youth Association for the Study of Nature) and the Jeugdbond voor Natuur- en Milieustudie, JNM, (Youth Association for the Study of Nature and the Environment). The figures are based on information provided by the organisations themselves.
