Association for Environmental Education (IVN): membership figures

Membership of the Association for Environmental Education (Vereniging voor Natuur- en Milieueducatie, IVN) has remained more or less constant over the past ten years.

Trends

The object of the IVN is to increase the amount of land given over to nature areas in the Netherlands and to improve the quality of the environment. Members are actively involved in nature conservation and environmental protection work. Membership has been more or less constant at about 16 000 over the past ten years.

The IVN is facing a decline in public interest in nature conservation and environmental protection. As it is particularly difficult to interest young people in IVN activities, the membership is ageing. In addition, the IVN expects that its members will engage in long-term joint efforts to promote certain objectives; people are less ready to do so than in the past, a fact that mirrors various social trends such as that towards individualisation.

Technical note

The information is from the national office of the IVN.
