Landscape management volunteers

In recent years, the number of volunteers working for provincial landscape management foundations has been stable.

Trends

In recent years, the number of volunteers working for provincial landscape management foundations has been more or less stable. In 2001, the figure was 21 094.An apparent drop in numbers after 1996 did not continue; however the proportion of elderly people making up volunteer numbers is increasing.

Most of the work is confined to weekends and holiday periods. In 2001, volunteers put in a total of approximately 500 000 hours of landscape maintenance work. In addition to the volunteers, the foundations had about 280 paid employees in 2001 whose work involves preserving and improving the quality of the landscape. They also organise the work of volunteers and programmes of information and education.

Technical note

Each Dutch province has a provincial landscape management foundation. These bodies carry out a wide range of activities aimed at preserving and improving the quality of the landscape. Landschapsbeheer Nederland (Landscape Management Netherlands) is the umbrella organisation for the provincial foundations. It publishes annual figures on the work carried out by volunteers.
