Nature conservation organisations: membership figures

Membership figures for the large Dutch non-government nature conservation organisations have risen significantly since 1990.

Trends

Membership of Natuurmonumenten (The Society for the Preservation of Nature Reserves in the Netherlands) and the Provinciale Landschappen (Provincial Nature Conservation Societies) has increased very significantly since the early 1990s. That growth has now levelled off. A total of some 7% of the Dutch population now support these nature conservation organisations. The Society for the Preservation of Nature Reserves in the Netherlands and the joint Provincial Nature Conservation Societies are two of the largest nature conservation organisations.

Nature conservation organisations play a major role in managing Dutch nature areas; they also provide a basis of public support for the natural environment and the landscape.

Technical note

The information is from the membership offices of the Society for the Preservation of Nature Reserves in the Netherlands and of De Landschappen, the partnership between the 12 Provincial Nature Conservation Societies.
