Agrarian nature conservation organisations: number

The number of agrarian nature conservation organisations in the Netherlands has increased sharply in the past ten years.

Trends

The number of agrarian nature conservation organisations (most are associations) has increased sharply, particularly since 1996. In 2001, some were still in the process of being set up but they were already active in the field of agrarian nature management.

A total of 63% of the agrarian nature conservation organisations are associations, 25% are foundations, 7% cooperatives and 5% do not (or do not yet) have a specific legal form.

The main object of most agrarian nature conservation organisations is to strengthen and preserve natural features and the quality of the landscape, often in combination with other aims, for example: contributing to sustainable and economically viable agriculture and horticulture; taking responsibility for regional development; improving the relationship between farmers and the general public; promoting "agrotourism"; improving access to financing for activities in the area of nature and landscape management; and helping farmers to pool know-how in the area of agrarian nature management.

Technical note

The data are from a survey of agrarian nature conservation organisations carried out early in 2001. The questionnaire was sent to all known agrarian nature conservation organisations (total: 110). The Boermarken in Drenthe - long-standing partnerships between farmers who manage communal land - were not included in the survey. The response was 68%, but in some cases respondents did not answer all the questions. Absolute numbers therefore need to be interpreted with caution. The primary significance of the results is that they enable comparisons to be made.

The year is known in which 74 of the associations commenced their activities; that is not necessarily the year in which they were officially set up. On this basis, the indicator gives an idea of the increase in the number of organisations.
