"Randstad Green Structure"

Up to the end of 2001, 41% of the "Randstad Green Structure" had been completed.

Trends

Up to the end of 2001, more than 5400 hectares of land had been acquired for the "Randstad Green Structure" (Randstadgroenstructuur), redeveloped and transferred to management bodies. This is 41% of the target of 13 300 hectares. Furthermore, more than 62% of the necessary land had been acquired. See also the progress in recreational Strategic Green Space projects (SGPs).

Policy objectives and implementation

The "Randstad" is the conurbation in the west of the country, running from Rotterdam to Amsterdam. It contains little in the way of woodland, nature areas or areas for recreation. By constructing the "Randstad Green Structure", the Dutch government aims to provide more green areas around the towns and cities in this part of the country. The Green Space Structure Plan (Structuurschema Groene Ruimte, SGR) refers to 13 300 hectares by 2013, but plans currently allow for 13 807 hectares. The "Nature for People, People for Nature" memorandum even mentions a target of 18 685 hectares for green areas in the Randstad.

The target for the "Randstad Green Structure" comprises the remaining target for the Second Implementation Programme for the Randstad Green Structure (Tweede Uitvoeringsprogramma Randstadgroenstructuur) and the target for six recreational Strategic Green Space projects (SGPs).

Besides the six SGPs that focus on recreation, there are twelve SGPs that focus on new nature areas.

Technical note

Progress on creating the "Randstad Green Structure" is compared with the target of 13,300 hectares specified in the SGR. The information is from the Land and Water Management Service (Dienst Landelijk Gebied, DLG); the reference date is 31 December. In 2000, the DLG changed its reporting method; figures for 1999 should therefore be taken only as an indication. The information regarding 2000 and 2001 is based on the DLG's progress reports.
