Composition of the Construction target sector
The Construction target sector (SIC 45) includes companies involved in residential and non-residential building work, civil and hydraulic engineering, installation and completion works. Preparatory work prior to building is also included in this target sector: i.e. sand and clay extraction, earth moving work and site preparation work.
Environmental pressure from the Construction target sector
The activities of the Construction target sector impact on the use of raw materials such as surface minerals, energy and water. There is no reliable data available about the consumption of water. A few consequences of construction activities on the environment are emissions to air and the generation of waste. There is a lack of good information about the impact of the extraction of surface minerals, for example the extraction of sand from the North Sea and the impact on flora and fauna on the seabed.
