Guide to Environmental pressure from Actors in the water chain

The preparation of drinking water and the treatment of wastewater both generate sludge that contains, for example, nutrients, metals and toxic organic compounds. Discharges of residues from wastewater treatment plants (UWWTPs) also contribute to the burden on surface water. The extraction of water from the environment for water supplies contributes to the desiccation of nature.

Composition of the 'Actors in the water chain' target sector

The 'Actors in the water chain' target sector comprises drinking and other water supplies, sewerage and purification of urban wastewater in urban wastewater treatment plants (UWWTPs). Wastewater treatment by industrial companies is classified under the Industry target sector. However, given the issues, these private industrial wastewater treatment plants (IWWTPs) are examined in this section.
