Guide to Environmental theme of Acidification and transboundary air pollution

The main sources of the acidifying substances sulphur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx) and ammonia (NH3) are agriculture and horticulture, industry, traffic and transport and the energy supply. Transboundary air pollution also includes emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and particulate matter. The pollution of the environment with these substances has harmful effects on ecosystems, materials and public health.

Index Acidification and transboundary air pollution

Why are acidification and transboundary air pollution included in a single category?

The substances that cause acidification and transboundary air pollution have comparable effects on ecosystems and public health. It is not possible to break down these effects according to cause, viz. acidification (SO2, NOX and NH3) and air pollution (VOCs and particulate matter). The environment policy therefore groups them into a single category.
