Introduction
The Netherlands is on a delta in the lowlands of northwest Europe. As almost the entire country has been cultivated at some time or another, the rural landscape is an outstanding example of a cultural landscape. It is the result of the interaction between humans (layout and land use) and nature (water, soil and ecological communities).
The Nature Compendium presents successively land use, the different types of landscape and its currents.
The quality of the landscape is presented from three points of view: de diversity of the landscape (with emphasis on the 'green and blue arteries'), the experienced value and the recognisability of the evolutionary history of valuable landscapes.
