Introduction
Statutory protection has as its aim the safeguarding of the species. Certain plant and animal species are protected in the Netherlands under national or international legislation: the Flora- en Faunawet at national level and the EU's Habitats and Birds directives at international level
Species protection plans have been drawn up for some of the protected species, and more are in the pipeline. These plans contain proposals for measures such as the restoration of habitats to remove the threat to species, and for the reintroduction of species in suitable areas.
