Introduction


Statutory protection has as its aim the safeguarding of the species. Species protection plans have been drawn up for some of the protected species, and more are in the pipeline. These plans contain proposals for measures such as the restoration of habitats to remove the threat to species, and for the reintroduction of species in suitable areas. Species protection plans have also been drawn up for certain species not given protected status.

The measures seem to be having an effect on some of the species with a protection plan (e.g. badger, barn owl, bats), but for others (e.g. butterflies) the measures as yet seem to be insufficient to halt the decline. However, for some species the plans are too recent for changes to be seen, or (as in the case of wall plants), information is lacking
