Introduction
Under the European Birds Directive and Habitats Directive, birds and various other species are protected throughout Europe. In addition, special protection zones have been designated for certain species (Birds Directive areas and Habitats Directive areas). Many species covered by the Birds Directive are increasing in the Netherlands, but many species covered by the Habitats Directive are declining. Both directives are being actively implemented in the Netherlands and therefore the trends largely show the starting position.
