Guidance Fragmentation: consequences for nature

Index section Fragmentation: consequences for nature

Introduction

Dutch nature areas are being fragmented by road construction and residential or industrial development. The roads form barriers and the traffic on them causes road kills. The habitat fragmentation creates small areas that are isolated to a greater or lesser degree and in which certain species have difficulty surviving. The fragmentation by roads forms a serious threat for the Dutch badger population. Also the sedge warbler is an example of a species which is susceptible to fragmentation of its habitat.
