Introduction


In the 20th century the agricultural area increased greatly as a result of the reclamation of wasteland and the empoldering of the Zuiderzee. Since 1970 the total agricultural area has been gradually diminishing, as land has been allocated to residential development, industrial estates, roads, and so on. Between 1989 and 1996 the agricultural area (excluding greenhouses) decreased by 50 000 ha.
