The Netherlands is making efforts through international cooperation to halt the worldwide decline in biodiversity. It therefore supports activities intended to protect nature in other countries.
Prior to 1996, the Dutch government did not have an overall international nature policy programme. In 1996, it introduced its International Nature Management Programme (Programma Internationaal Natuurbeheer, PIN), which ran until 2000. In 2001, the PIN objectives were reformulated, after which the International Policy Programme on Biodiversity (Beleidsprogramma Biodiversiteit Internationaal, BBI) commenced.
PIN
The total budget for international nature management between 1996 and 2000 was spent largely on tropical forests in developing countries and on Central and Eastern Europe
BBI
The International Policy Programme on Biodiversity (BBI) plays a major role in the efforts made by the Netherlands to promote the preservation and sustainable use of biodiversity in other countries. The indicators show the size of the budget, the themes, and an initial indication of the funds spent within the context of the Action Plan for Nature Management in Central and Eastern Europe (Actieplan Natuurbeheer Midden- en Oost-Europa), one of the components of the BBI.
